Jan Kolenda

Jan is a clay artist who works with highly decorated functional and sculptural ceramics. Most recently her work has expanded to include large scale relief ceramic tile murals and sculptures. She has worked with clay for over 20 years and the process has never failed to excite and inspire her. She is drawn to the plasticity of the medium and its responsiveness to touch. No matter how many times she takes wet clay, manipulates it and finally fires it, turning the material and her impressions to stone, she is constantly amazed with the transformation.
The continuing theme and direction for her work has always been the subject of nature. As a child she was captivated by the beauty of the natural world. Plants and animals were the focus of her daily discoveries and play. Climbing trees, building stick forts, hiding amongst the brush, searching for insects, birds, and animals was the source of her endless fascination. Her work is the direct result of this continued interest. Her art starts out in that quiet place of childhood memories where play and exploration are intermingled. There is a feeling of wonder and excitement as nature’s secrets are revealed. As she works, she slips back to those early years where discovery was play and now creativity and memory give way to play. It would please her to know that those viewing her work would join her in this childhood joy.
